TAKING EFFECTIVE NOTES

What is taking notes?

-Writing down ideas from lectures and reading in our own words.

WHY TAKING NOTES?

  •   It can helps us to pay attention in class.
  •   Provides additional repetition.
  •   Helps us to study for quiz, tests or final exam.
  •   Provides an accurate record of information.
  •   Helps you organize the information.
  •   Promotes active listening.


BEFORE CLASS

  • ·         Review the notes from the day before class.
  • ·         Review your reading assignment.
  • ·         Make sure you have paper, text, pencil or pens.


HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR CLASS?

  • Ø  Do pre-reading and homework.
  • Ø  Preview previous notes.
  • Ø  We must review syllabus.
  • Ø  Look up the keywords was given.


HOW DO WE TAKE NOTES?

  •     Date and label notes.
  •   Consider the organization.
  •   Gives ourselves space to write.
  •   Evaluate your note taking skills.
  •   Consider the content.

  
STRATEGIES FOR TAKING LECTURE NOTES

  • a)    Don’t rely on your memory alone.
  • b)    Use a full-size notebook.
  • c)    Include the topic in your notes.
  • d)    Leave some space in your notes.
  • e)    Use common abbreviations in your notes.
  • f)     Skip a few spaces if you miss.
  • g)    Use a recorder with a counter.
  • h)   Play recorded lectures while you commute.
  • i)     Find a note-taking ``buddy’’.
  • j)      Reduce distractions.


PREPARE BEFORE TAKING NOTES

BECOME AN ACTIVE LISTENER

1.    Deciding you want to listen.
2.    Paying attention to the lecture
3.    Selecting relevant information and ignoring the distraction around you.
4.    Interpreting the information to make it meaningful.
5.    Condensing the information before writing down.
6.    Organizing the information under the appropriate headings or subheading.
7.    Taking notes.

STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING YOUR LISTENING SKILLS

1.    Read the text assignment before the lecture to build background on the topic.
2.    Review your last sets of notes before the lecture begins.
3.    Sit in the professor’s line of vision.
4.    Decided that you want to listen.
5.    Focus your attention physically by sitting up and making eye contact with speaker.
6.    Focus your attention mentally by eliminating.
7.    Listen for the main points and related details and take notes.
8.    Ask and answer the questions.

                               PLAGIARISM

                        WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

  • Ø  Refer to act of taking an idea, writing or creations of others and claim proudly that it was the result of his own creations.


HOW TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM?
  •   Paraphrasing

·         Means, express the meaning of the writer or speaking or something written using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
  •   Referencing

·         Refer to provide ( a book or article ) with citations of authorities.

 STEPS TO PREVENT PLAGIARISM
  •  Reword

§  Place the words by using synonyms.
  •   Rearrange

§  Active to passive, passive to active.
  •   Recheck

§  Make sure the meaning is same.

PARAPHRASING EXERCISE

Exercising is very positive for the immune system. People should exercise at least three times a week.

  •   Exercise gives advantages to immune system. It should be done at least three times a week.
  •   Our immune system will get benefit when we exercise. It is at least three times a week.


Part time job allows students to gain extra income to support their financial. However, students need to be the wise in managing their time for work and study.

Students must be given freedom to use their mobile in the classroom. It can be used as learning tool for the students to search for extra notes or explanation.

STEPS TO REFERENCING

One of the this important ways to avoid plagiarism referencing:

  • Ø  Include a referencing page or page of words cited at the end of your paper.
  • Ø  You must check the guidelines for citing sources properly and make sure that the page meets the document formatting guidelines.


             CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE

                                               GPA AND CGPA

  •   A Grade Point Average (GPA) refers to the calculated average of the letter grade a students in each semester following a 0 to 4.0 grades.
  •   Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) refers to the overall GPA, which includes dividing the number of quality points earns in all courses attempted by the total credit hours in all attempted courses.

  • Refer to a system or mechanism for assessing and reporting learner’s intergrated development and learning gains of their ADA.
